Summary

First, I wanted to highlight the late Wednesday announcement...

Maybe the US President would like to kick the trade/tariff can once every two weeks?

Meanwhile, as expected the ECB cut rates by -10bps to -0.5%. Tiered deposit rates were also announced. It was somewhat surprising to see renewed QE of €20bn a month. I had expected Draghi to leave Lagarde to be the one to spin back up the printers.

Draghi has just one more ECB meeting left, before Lagarde takes over in November. I guess she'll be the one to eventually start buying equities... and not just those within the EU. Indeed, even though the US Fed isn't currently printing, doesn't mean other central banks aren't driving up US asset prices.

Trump chimed in...

... as the US President continues to lead a charge for negative rates.
--

US equities opened positive, and saw a few swings on yet more trade speculation. With bond yields and the Euro whipsawing back upward, the market built moderate gains into the late afternoon. The late afternoon saw a touch of cooling.

Volatility was ground lower, with the VIX settling -2.7% at 14.22. A spike to the 18/19s with the sp'2920s is high threat.

The dark monetary path

So, we now have European rates of -0.5%, and monthly QE of €20bn. We're another few steps along what is a dark monetary path. By definition, negative rates are destructive of savings, which are the basis of all genuine capital formation.

The Draghi

What is at the end of the path? Weimar republic level inflation? A complete collapse of the European economy? Whatever is at the end of the path.... it ain't going to be pleasant. Those in the US should consider themselves lucky, although you're probably only a few years behind the EU.

Yours truly holds onto one small solace... that the financial historians of the 22nd or 23rd century will correctly detail the madness which consumed the ECB and most other central banks in the early 21st century.

Summary

US equities opened in minor chop mode, which was appropriate for Sept'11th. The morning leaned upward, with the SPX battling upward into the late afternoon. The closing seconds saw a micro short-stop cascade, settling at the giant 3000 threshold.

Meanwhile...

It is increasingly unusual if we don't have a day, where the US President takes a swipe at the Fed.

Volatility was ground lower, with the VIX settling -3.9% at 14.61. The s/t cyclical setup favours the equity bears. Right now, the most realistic target are the sp'2920s, with VIX 18/19s. Its difficult to see anything more dramatic than that ahead of next Wednesday's FOMC.

Thursday will see the ECB announce its latest policy decision, with Draghi likely to cut rates, if only by -10bps to -0.50%. It should be a reminder to the mainstream of where we're broadly headed into 2020.

Summary

US equities opened a little weak, with the SPX flooring at  2957, and then a very natural rebound into early afternoon. The closing hour saw a mini ramp, with the SPX even turning fractionally positive, settling +1pt to 2979.

Volatility picked up a little, with the VIX printing 16.52 in late morning, but settling -0.5% at 15.20. S/t outlook still offers the sp'2920s with VIX 18/19s. The ECB this Thursday would be a prime excuse.
