Subdued into the weekend

US equity indexes closed fractionally mixed, sp -0.4pts at 2596. Nasdaq comp' -0.2%. The two leaders - Trans/R2K, settled u/c and +0.1% respectively. VIX settled -6.7% at 18.19. Near term outlook still offers the sp'2620/30s as earnings begin to pour in.

Summary

US equities opened moderately weak, pressured via weakness in Europe, and concerns about the ongoing US govt' shutdown. The day consisted of micro chop, with the spx settling effectively u/c.

Volatility saw a high of 20.16, but then resumed melt mode, falling for the 10th day of 12, settling in the low 18s. Its arguable that the sp'2620/30s will equate to VIX 16/15s.

I don't see a recession

US equity indexes closed moderately higher, sp +11pts (0.4%) at 2596. The two leaders - Trans/R2K, settled +0.4% and +0.5% respectively. Near term outlook offers further weak chop, with the sp'2600s on the menu with financial earnings next week.

Summary

US equities opened moderately lower, but managed to turn fractionally higher into midday. Powell's appearance initially helped, although the market wasn't happy with the reminder about the ongoing reduction in the balance sheet. The afternoon saw moderate chop, but managing to break a new multi-week high of 2597.

Volatility saw a morning high of 21.32, but then melted lower, settling -2.4% at 19.50. Its highly arguable that the sp'2620/30s would equate to VIX 16/15s.

"I don't see a recession"

Fed chair Powell at the Economic Club

Powell made it clear he doesn't see a US recession this year, and for the moment... neither does yours truly. Yet growth could easily slow to 2.0/1.5%. Indeed, a fair number within the mainstream are expecting growth to slow to around 2% by year end.

Headline US growth and employment data continue to come in fine, but the housing market remains pretty weak, with the ISM and PMI data points ticking lower. Powell acknowledged weakness in China, but made no mention of the EU. The EU is arguably the biggest problem this year, with Germany set to officially be seen as in recession with the first print of Q4 GDP - due Feb'14th. Where Germany goes... the rest of the EU can be expected to follow.

The US is not going to be able to fully escape from being infected via a weakening Europe and Asia. Never mind the basket case that is the collective of central and south America.

Nothing has changed. I would still look for QT to be suspended as early as March/April, with a subsequent rate cut. The latter would be the ultimate equity sell signal.

Eight of ten

US equity indexes closed on a positive note, sp +10pts (0.4%) at 2584. The two leaders - Trans/R2K, settled +1.4% and +0.8% respectively. Near term outlook offers a mini washout on Thursday, but regardless... the sp'2620/30s appear on track.

Summary

Despite a few intraday swings, the spx managed to settle net higher for the 8th day of 10. Whilst Thursday might see a mini washout (I can think of a few excuses), the 2620/30s look on track. I'm already starting to wonder about the OPEX of Jan'18th. Would the market makers not want to whack things back down to psy'2500? Its just a thought.

Meanwhile, volatility saw a kooky print of 22.80 in early morning, but settled in the upper 19s. The 16/15s would likely sync with the low/mid 2600s.

Bonus chart: Japan, monthly

Like most other world markets, the Nikkei is starting the year strong, currently +2.1% at 20427. However, things only turn back to bullish >21k, and a monthly settlement above that appears very unlikely. The recent break of l/t trend is not to be dismissed lightly!
